Gasoline Gypsies Rule!
Tin Can Tourists roll out in style
Of course, given the state of the economy, global warming and the current fuel crisis, I may have to make a few alterations to my plan. Say, growing enough crops to feed the six mule team that will have to pull my little aluminum home. But, for now, let's stick to the fantasy version: gas is plentiful, I've got my health – and a fat pocketbook, world peace abounds and they've figured out how to grind up conservative rhetoric and turn it into a renewable energy source.
I can dream, can't I?
"Gasoline gypsies," as trailer campers are sometimes called, are romantic by nature. As historical photos reveal, for as long as there have been cars, there have been "car campers." And for as long as there have been car campers, there have been the Tin Can Tourists. Founded in 1919 in Tampa, Florida, the organization was created to "unite fraternally all autocampers." The club, which had its own song, secret handshake and unique member identification emblem (a tin can welded to your radiator cap and, later, your grill) flourished through the ‘50s – but by 1970, dawn of the first major gas crisis, it was all but dead.
